Lafourche Parish Association of Educators calendar (so far)
OKAY FOLKS, here is our calendar (tentative of course) but you'll all be notified if we have to change any of the dates. We have been meeting on the second Wednesday of the month, but a change has been requested and approved at the last AR Meeting held. The new meeting dates will be changed to the second Thursday of the month to assure everyone a chance to attend the School board meetings which are held on Wednesdays. Wendy Percle and Evelyn Loftin will work together to faithfully send out flyers to let everyone know that we are now meeting at Lin's Chinese Restaurant in Thibodaux, due to the need of a more secure meeting room. That is located in the shopping center before the super Walmart. This is the shopping center where Big Lots is located. It is on the left of the highway and not hard to find. It is a nice place and so far can handle our needs. The foods pretty good too! Come on out for the November meeting. Any changes will be made as they come up and you will be notified here.

Lafourche Recieves Awards from LAE!
Hooray for us all. We, the LPAE, have recieved two awards from he LAE Fleur di Lis program. The program gives six awards to locals who fulfil the obligations of the program in six areas. We applied for and received awards of excellence in the areas of communication and advocacy. We submitted our communication projects and methods and showed that we do indeed stand up for the membership and our professions in school board meetings, as well as through our contact with elected officials on all levels. This is wonderful, but we're not done. There are four more areas in which we hope to compete in the upcoming year in order to garner all six awards available. We will keep you all posted of our progress here. Also, we may ask some of you for help in attaining our goals. Please volunteer when you can.

Ray Barrios has been elected to the LAE Executive Committee.
The LAE Board of Directors has elected Ray Barrios to serve as a member of the Executive Committee for the state's premier education association the Louisiana Association of Educators. Ray has accepted the position and responsibilties that go with it. Ray also serves a three year term on the LAE's FTCP committee and is presently serving out the remainder of his three year term as member of the Board of Directors for the LAE representing District 6 Seat B. Ray's term of office for this position will be up soon, but he will run for the position again. He has represented the 13 parishes within the district well and we hope his run is successful. When the time comes, please vote for Ray to continue to serve District 6 again.

The law on your side ! I am not giving up on this topic and neither should you!
According to a statute brought to my attention recently, the minimum amount of planning time any teacher may have is 45 minutes. Note that this is the minimum and anything other than that is at the discretion of the individual principals within your school. It is also important to note that according to the same statute (one line down folks) the minimum amount of time for the lunch period is 30 minutes unincumbered, duty free, with no extension of the work day allowed. Interesting isn't it? No school that I know of had been getting 30 minutes for their lunch period. Many, if not all, of the elementary schools have no lunch period at all unless it is incumbered with duty. Curious? Email me for the exact number of the statute that is being used to keep some of us at the minimum required time for our planning period and also shows that Lafourche Parsih is violating the rest of the same statute concerning lunch periods. Please email your question to either rbarrios@mobiletel.com or the email account found in the website.

It's time to start thinking about who we want to represent us.
Many politicians will be seeking their old positions or perhaps some will seek new ones. We must all make them understand that they are suppose to represent the people and not their own interest. Find out which of the present politicians in office have stood by our side in our fight to gain respect and pay. What politicians say in news print does not always equal the truth. Which are our friends and which have betrayed the office they pledged to serve as well as the people they promised to serve? Are some swayed by the power of big and wealthy lobbiest like the tobacco lobby? Ask around and get the real scoop, not the drivel that some mushroom journalist like to call news or editorials.

We will need to start accepting nominations for officers of our own association soon.
Soon the positions of President, Vice President (now vacate), Secretary and Treasuror will be open once more. These honorable positions come with a great deal of responsibility. The officers in this organization give up time and energy to assure that the association runs as smoothly as possible and that the membership is represented everywhere needed. The position do have their own job descriptions to serve as a guideline of what each officer is expected to do, but other duties my need to be added as needed. If you feel you have the desire and the time to devote to serving the membership and furthering the goals of the local association, please step up and run for a position. All positions serve at the will of the membership. Please email either Evelyn Loftin, Jane Moffett, or Ray Barrios if you want to nominate anyone for any position. Nominations will also be accepted at the next A R Meeting. All members are invited to attend any and all AR Meetings throughout the year. This is normally where the voting takes place. Please come be a part of the process.

Loftin will remain in her role as LAE Board member!
Congratulations go out to Evelyn Loftin who was recently unapposed in her run for the board seat she presently holds. Evelyn Loftin will service was stellar and she will continue to serve. Yeah, Evelyn!!!

Lafourche Parish has lost its position for being first in membership !
Lafourche Parish Association of Educators has garnered the top honors in the entire state for membership increases twice in the last six years, but to date has lost the honor to East Baton Rouge who posted a three digit increase. Our trophy, which once honored LPAE, will be given to EBR President,Carol White by Ray Barrios at the earliest date possible. Here in Lafourche we plan to work toward increasing membership again this year. Come join a professional Education Organization, come join the LPAE! Be a part of something!Help us to get our trophy back!
